Throughout the course of the eMentoring program, Mentors discuss the Four Key Questions and other college-related topics with Mentees through regular communications, including:

  • At least one e-mail exchange per week;
  • At least one phone call per month;
  • At least one school site visit per year (preferred, but not required);
  • At least one group meeting per month (see below).

All Mentees are expected to attend a monthly group meeting. The goal of the monthly session is to discuss the program and share progress on the answers to the Four Key Questions.

All Mentors are expected to call into a monthly group conference call. The goal of the monthly session is to discuss any problems and share positive and negative experiences with the program and their Mentees.

The average time commitment for this program is about 30–60 minutes per week. All participants are expected to remain active for the entire duration of at least one program cycle (one year). During summers, the program continues as normal but without a required in-person meeting.

Each Mentor is assigned 1–2 Mentees of the same gender. When possible, efforts will be made to match pairs based on other factors as well (e.g., career goals, academic interests, college choices).

Upon completion of a program cycle (one year), Mentors and Mentees in good standing are enrolled in our alumni network and eligible to continue with the program. We strongly encourage and support Mentors and Mentees who wish to continue their participation in the program beyond a single program cycle. Ideally, every Mentor-Mentee relationship will last at least until the Mentee enrolls in college. We can support relationships to this point, and thereafter encourage lifelong friendships. Once a Mentee enrolls in college, he or she is invited to serve as a Mentor and help support the program.

This program is free. We do not charge high school students. We do not charge parents. We do not charge schools. However, there are many costs associated with this program, from staffing and website operations to travel and legal fees. Our resources are limited. Therefore, we only work with schools that we believe will take this program into their community and make it their own. The long-term sustainability and financing of this program is the responsibility of the community in which it exists.

We enthusiastically welcome and encourage the support of parents, teachers, students, school officials, businesses, local leaders, and alumni in the form of volunteering, recognition and publicity, feedback, in-kind resources, contacts, financial donations, and fundraising. We rely on community support.
